Large oval faience soup tureen with matching cover and stand, the tureen molded with scrolls, gadrooning, and shellwork decorated in rose, or pink-purple (pourpre de Cassius), and green enamel on a white ground, with four scrolled feet similarly decorated, the handles are molded with feathers and are enameled in shades of yellow and rose; the domed quatrefoil lid is similarly decorated and has an elaborate knop in the shape of naturalistically molded celery, peas, mushrooms, and mussels; the stand with two intertwined and pierced handles in shades of rose and likewise molded with scrolls and shellwork, also enameled in blue and yellow with a green, molded artichoke sprig in the center and with mushrooms and crustaceans at either end.
Elegant, simple hot water urn of sterling silver with bright-cut engraving, urn-shaped with two elongated, reeded loop handles on a short stem with round foot mounted on a square plinth with four small ball feet, the frontal spigot with a carved tap, the cylindrical domed cover with a finial in the form of a covered urn, the body, plinth, cover, and spigot with beaded borders, the body decorated in bright-cut engraving with an oval reserve that has been left empty surmounted by a tied ribbon, below the lip a band of repeating diamond and floral motifs.
Medallion with profile portrait of Lord Hillsborough (1717-1793), known as the Viscount Hillsborough from 1742 to 1751 and as the Earl of Hillsborough from 1751 to 1789, was a British politician of the Georgian era. Best known in North America as the Earl of Hillsborough, he served as Secretary of State for the Colonies from 1768 to 1772, a critical period leading toward the American War of Independence.
