Summer Art Camp

Education is fundamental to the mission of the Birmingham Museum of Art (BMA). We seek to provide quality art learning opportunities throughout the greater Birmingham area, improving the cultural and social wellbeing of our community. The BMA is excited to bring back our enriching summer art camp series this year to continue to nurture the youth in our area and encourage creativity, exploration, innovation, and imagination.

Rising 1st through 3rd Graders

June 3-7, 2024 | Costume Basics

The art of costuming is more than just sewing! Campers will get an introduction into costume design, learning basic sewing techniques, sketching, the art of inspiration boards, and styling, all while exploring Heroes & Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume exhibition.

June 10-14, 2024 | Pattern Play

Campers will dive into the world of textiles to explore the patterns, colors, and fibers of beautiful work meant to be worn and used. They will learn about paper mache, quilting, and other fiber arts from the BMA collection and Heroes & Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume  exhibition.


 

Rising 4th through 6th Graders

June 24-28, 2024 | Costume Basics

The art of costuming is more than just sewing! Campers will get an introduction into costume design, learning basic sewing techniques, sketching, the art of inspiration boards, and styling, all while exploring Heroes & Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume exhibition.

July 8-12, 2024 | Stylized Visions

What makes a character a hero or villain? Using the exhibition Heroes & Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume and our collection, we will discuss basics of costume design. Campers will explore costumes, props, and accessories to show how styling costumes can bring a character to life.

July 15-19, 2024 | Costume Culture

Costumers have long taken inspiration from both pop culture and history when creating their designs. Throughout the week, campers will explore various costumes on display in the special exhibition Heroes & Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume and from fashion in the BMA collection, creating wearable art pieces through a variety of artistic techniques.


 

Rising 7th through 9th Graders

July 22-26, 2024 | Intro in Special Effects

It’s not just the costumes that make the characters. Various costumes on display in the exhibition Heroes & Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume also utilize special effects (FX) to bring the characters to life. Campers will be introduced to the world of special effects  through make-up design and application, mask making, and prop making.
