Soup Bowl

Qing dynasty (1644-1912), Qianlong period (1736-1795), About 1780

This bowl is thought to be from a service for Thomas Hudson (1741-1807). Little is known about Mr. Hudson. His only surviving son, Thomas, was prominent in the East India Company, but the father is nowhere listed in the company records. The two-handled bowl is an unusual form and there are no other known pieces from this service.

Large, oblong vase of heavy, beige glazed stoneware, the sides are rounded and the opening at the top is narrow, each end of the vase is decorated in an abstract, semi-geometric pattern in shades of gray, white, rust, black, and beige, the central body is decorated on each side with a broad stripe of mottled, almost metallic, gray glaze.
