Oval blue jasper medallion with white relief profile portrait of Catherine II (The Great), (1729-1796), was Empress of Russia from 1762 until 1796, the country's longest-ruling female leader and arguably the most renowned (although Peter the Great was the only Tsar officially designated as "The Great"[citation needed]). She came to power following a coup d'état when her husband, Peter III, was assassinated. Russia was revitalised under her reign, growing larger as well as stronger in military terms and becoming recognised as one of the great powers of Europe.
Coffee biggin of solid white jasper with dark blue jasper dip and applied white jasper relief decoration, the coffee pot of bulbous shape with loop handle and curved spout, the body with applied white lattice work and vignettes of classical figures, the strainer that sits atop the pot of cylindrical shape and likewise decorated with lattice work motifs and classical figures, the conforming cover similarly decorated with lattice work and small classical vignettes, including the Cupid Seller and Priam Begging Achilles for the Body of Hector, with Sybil finial, the interior of the pot is glazed.
