Oval medallion with profile portrait of Viscount St. Albans, Francis Bacon (1561-1626). Francis Bacon was an English philosopher, lawyer and politician. Born in London, the son of Sir Nicholas Bacon. He went to Trinity College, Cambridge in 1573, and was called to be the Bar in 1582. He was elected member of Parliament in 1584, became Solicitor-General in 1607, and Attorney-General in 1613. He was raised to the peerage as Lord Verulam in 1618 and created Viscount St Albans in 1621. He is still today a famous philosopher known for his work the Novum Orgamum. He was found guilty of taking bribes from litigants and imprisoned in the Tower and banished from Parliament and the great court.
Solid light blue jasper rum kettle of bulbous shape with applied white jasper relief decoration in the form of the Dancing Hours below a band of floral garlands and paterae, the lower body engine turned, with an indented, leaf-molded bail handle and elongated spout with decorative acanthus leaves below it; the cover (a marriage) of solid light blue jasper with a darker blue jasper dip and a band of white jasper guilloche and stiff leaf motifs, with white jasper cupid finial.
Small, rectangular box with truncated edges, the top with a blue enamel band running around the edge, set with an enameled metal plaque painted with a view of the seaport at Constantinople (today's Istanbul) with rustic structures in a forested area in the foreground and a hilly landscape with trees and a large domed church on the hill on the right in the background, the plaque is edged in blue enamel and the gold around it is elaborately chased with a pattern of scrolling foliage and delicate stylized flowers, each side includes a central reserve edged in blue enamel and with a repeating pattern of small floral motifs inside, above the reserves runs a band of leafy and floral motifs around the perimeter of the box, each corner is decorated with a design of scrolling foliage; the underside of the box includes a border of stylized anthemion and vine motifs edged in blue enamel and a central panel, also edged in blue enamel, of an elaborate floral bouquet.
