Oval blue jasper medallion with white relief profile portrait of Euclid facing left, Greek mathemetician also referred to as the "father of geometry" active in Alexandria during the reign of Ptolemy I (323 - 283 B.C.E). His Elements is one of the influential works in the history of mathematics, serving as the main textbook for teaching mathematics especially geometry from the time of its publication until the late 19th or 20th century. In the Elements, Euclid deduced the principles of what is now called Euclidean geometry from a small set of axioms. Euclid also wrote works on perspective, conic sections, spherical geometry, number theory and rigor.
Small, irregularly round bowl of coarse reddish brown stoneware covered with an opaque glaze that is bluish at the rim and drips down white then becomes beige as the glaze runs down the body of the bowl, the glaze is speckled and flecked and the bowl is decorated on both sides with bluish squiggle patterns highlighted in white, there are glaze free spots at the foot where the potter held the piece while dipping it into the glaze.
