Stars with Checkerboard Corner Blocks quilt, found in Lamar County, Alabama
Large unbleached plain-weave white cotton bedspread or coverlet made up of three vertically oriented panels stitched together and decorated with white candlewick embroidered floral motifs, at the top in large letters the signature and date " Martha R. Richards / 1833," below the signature an urn with flowers and vines at bottom center with flowers filling the central portion of the coverlet and vines snaking along the left and right edges with flowers emanating from them, the two long sides and lower edge finished with a knotted border and fringe of unbleached cotton, the top edge is finished with a border of cotton fringing.
Large, mostly red, white and blue cotton embroidered and appliqued quilt designed to commemorate the bicentennial of the signing of the US constitution in 1787, in the center a blue square edged in red and with a smaller red square at an angle inside it, within this a blue square with the image of a full-rigged ship on its way to the New World, at each corner a roundel that includes representations of the three branches of the United States government as well as liberty illustrated by a torch in the lower right corner, at the top are the dates 1787 and 1987 and the American flag flanked by the flags of the four European countries that contributed to the early European settlement of North America: Great Britain, Spain, the Netherlands, and France, along the sides are olive branches signifying peace, and along the bottom of the quilt are thirteen individuals in native or traditional dress representing the diversity of the United States.
