Ishiyakushi, Picture of the Station House, from the series Fifty-Three Stations of Tōkaidō

Ando Hiroshige

Edo period (1615-1868), 1840-1842

This series of prints is one of the most famous in all of Japan. Showing the various stops along the Tokaido Highway, there are dozens of variations on the different scenes such as this, the Kyoka, or Humor edition.

Ishiyakushi was not an important stop on the highway. Most people paused only for refreshment and to have their papers checked at the official way station as seen here.
