Large silver hot water urn on square base with four ball feet, the edges reeded, resting on round foot with two reeded bands encircling the foot, on short stem the bulbous body plain, with two, round hinged handles and wide band of reeding at the shoulder, extending from the lower body is a long, reeded spigot with ivory knob, the elegantly domed cover with central band of reeding and ball finial, on one side of the cover engraved the arms of the Stephens family impaled with the arms of the Lugg family, with badge above (a rampant lion left); inside the urn is a long tube with domed cover and ball finial that inserts into a ring to hold it upright, to contain hot coal with which to keep the water hot.
Oval black basalt medallion with relief portrait of John Dryden (1631-1700) facing right. John Dryden was born in Aldwincle near Thrapston in Northamptonshire the eldest of fourteen children. In 1650 Dryden went to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied the standard curriculum of classics, rhetoric, and mathematics. He graduated in 1654 with his BA, graduating top of the list for Trinity that year. Dryden returned to London during the Protectorate, where he obtained work with Cromwell's secretary of state, John Thurloe. This later helped him publish his first poem, Heroic Stanzas (1658), a eulogy on Cromwell's death which is cautious and prudent in its emotional display.
Very delicate, thin medallion of white jasper with dark blue jasper dip, on the front the relief scene of the Bourbonnais Shepherd.
Cup and saucer of solid white jasper with lilac jasper dip and applied white and green jasper relief decoration, the cup slightly tapered and with leaf-molded loop handle, with a band of green and white quatrefoil motifs around the lower edge, the main body engine-turned to create a lilac and white checkerboard pattern with vertical columns of white oak leaf vines in between and green quatrefoils on the white squares, with a vine of oak leaves running around the upper edge, the conforming saucer with similar checkerboard pattern around the interior rim and a band of oak leaves around the well, with stylized acanthus leaves around the outer edge.
