Cats are common throughout China. Because they catch and eat rats, they are believed to be the protector of silk worms that are stolen by rats. A cat seen washing its face is believed to foretell the arrival of a stranger. Because of their nocturnal prowling, cats are also believed to be able to steal moonbeams.
