Intimate Exchanges: Unpacking Small Format Late Qing Paintings

Dr. Richard Pegg will take a deep dive into the small intimate formats of album leaves and fans in the current exhibition Hand-held: The Four Seasons in Chinese Painting. He will examine the relationships between the “three accomplishments” of painting, poetry and calligraphy as they relate to the historical and cultural exchanges taking place in the creation of these paintings.

Dr Richard A. Pegg is currently Director and Curator of Asian Art for the MacLean Collection, an Asian art museum and separate map library located north of Chicago, U.S. Dr Pegg has a BA and MA in East Asian Literature from The George Washington University and a PhD in East Asian Art History from Columbia University. He has written and lectured widely on the visual, literary, cartographic and martial arts traditions of East Asia.
