Hot Topics: The Implications of Artificial Intelligence in Art

October 25, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

This enlightening panel discussion, moderated by Jade Powers, the BMA’s Hugh Kaul Curator of Contemporary Art, will include experts from the domains of new media, art history, and contemporary art to delve into the realm of artificial intelligence (AI) within the arts. For those unfamiliar, AI in the arts refers to the use of algorithms and computational creativity to assist or produce artworks, pushing the boundaries of what we traditionally understand as art.

The panel proudly presents University of Montevallo New Media Professor, Collin Williams, and artist Travis Rice.. They are joined by contemporary art curator, artist, and Senior Director of the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts, John Fields. In a novel twist, the AI-powered language model, ChatGPT, will also be incorporated as a unique panelist, offering insights from the perspective of artificial intelligence.

Throughout the discussion, the panelists will explore the multifaceted ways artists can navigate this dynamic and rapidly changing ecosystem. They will ponder AI’s transformative influence on art’s creation, dissemination, and appreciation. Attendees will be invited to share questions for the panelists at the end of the program.
