A black and white photographs featuring a dirt road leading up to a Steel mill in the background The steel mill is the Ensley Works steel plant in Birmingham Alabama To the left of the dirt road is single story smaller houses with some larger structures to the end of the road and one on the right side of the road as well Power poles also line the road on the left side leading up to the steel plant The furnaces of the plant are wider towards the base with much thinner chimneys on the top
In his catalogue raisonné of Innesss work Michael Quick describes the painting writing On the right are two dismasted battleships both aflame the nearer one silhouetted by the brighter explosive glow from the one behind it In the rolling waves at the left men escape in three rowboats The conflagration lights up the foreground waves and the clouded night sky
