This framed collage shows a typescript poem on an orange background. Titled “VILLANELLE” the French poem is broken into six stanzas. Collaged elements are pasted onto the left side of the composition. They include a butterfly in the top left corner, a winged angel in the middle left, and a classical Greek horse drawn chariot and winged charioteer at the bottom center. On the verso a collaged French newspaper serves as a background for a green-tinted, speckled piece of paper that is drawn on in yellow oil pastel. Within this piece of paper, the title ““Villanelle” by Max Jacob” is written in the top left corner in black ink. In the bottom, the artist’s signature reads “Joseph Cornell.”
