Blue-and-White Bowl with Zhang Guolao and Crane Riding a Cloud Interior and Eight Taoist Immortals Exterior
This art deco short-sleeved ikat (Kasuri 絣) woven silk robe features snowflakes with plum blossoms against a brilliant plum-colored ground. The plum color underscores the plum blossoms motif while the snow-flakes emphasize the seasonality of the robe. Plum trees often bud in snowfall and frequently bloom on the cusp of winter changing to spring sometimes dusted by snow. The red buds are featured within the snow-flake silhouettes while a cascade of smaller white snowflakes fall across the garment. Ikat (Kasuri 絣) is a laborious process whereby the threads are dyed with a pattern before they are woven. The resulting woven textiles reveal a tell-tale zig-zag halo at the edges of the design that result in a unique aesthetic (though one that has been copied in far less laborious printed textiles).
