Fall and Winter Seasons in Farming, Half of a Pair of Six-panel Folding Screens Depicting the Four Seasons

Tosa School

Edo period (1615-1868), About 1750

Scenes of various activities during the four seasons were very popular during the Edo period (1615 -1868). The idyllic imagined life of the farmer is the subject of this screen. The various activities of the countryside in fall and winter are divided between the panels. The location of a matching screen showing spring and summer is now unknown. The hard work of harvesting and threshing the rice fields is broken up with leisure activities such as drinking sake, dancing, hunting, and fishing.
