- Inscription On the back inscribed in, likely, Thomas Bentley's own hand, "Wedgwood & Bentley beg Sir Wm. Hamilton will do them the honor to accept of an Etruscan Bas-relief Portrait of himself as a small testimony of Respect and gratitude to a Gentleman who has conferred obligations upon this Kingdom in general and upon themselves in particular which may be the means, not only of improving and refining the Public Taste but of keeping alive that Sacred Fire, which his Collection of unestimable models has happily kindled in Great Britain, so long as burnt Earth and Etruscan Painting shall endure. Great Newport Street, April 30, 1772."
