This black and white photograph shows the gnarled base of a tree trunk in the foreground of the image, extending to the upper edge of the sheet. Beyond the tree trunk is the tree's shadow in the left center of the image, another tree at the right center, and the rising peaks of mountains in the distance.
This painting represents a view of a valley. Rocky, treeless mountains rise to the left and right size of the canvas, with sandy, yellow-brown ground, trees, and shrubs in the foreground. The purple and gray mountains are shrouded in mist and recede into the background.
