In this painting, a valley flanked by rocky mountains on two sides (Yosemite Valley) is blanketed with a thin layer of snow. In the center of the canvas, a large tree with orange leaves extends vertically through the composition, standing just behind a body a shallow, still river. The middle ground is composed of trees—both pines and leafy trees with autumnally colored foliage—masked by a hazy atmosphere.
