No.3 Actor Kawarazaki Sanshō as Kaminari Shōkurō

Utagawa Kunisada, Published by Maruyama Kyushiro

Edo period (1615-1868), 1864

Gonin Otoku was a gang of outlaws executed in 1702. Eventually the characters ceased to be villains and were transformed into feisty folk heroes who stood up to wicked Samurai. Their exploits provided the basis for many popular Puppet and Kabuki plays. These prints illustrate one of their tales that is often performed as an interlude in Part Two of the Kabuki play Hatsumombi Kuruwa Soga, or A Soga Drama on the First Festival Day in the Pleasure District.
