Harry Buten (1904-1971) and Nettie Buten (1902-1998), Merion, Pennsylvania, in 1969 [see note 1]; gift to their daughter Beatrice Buten Magee [see note 2]; gift to the Art Fund, Inc. at the Birmingham Museum of Art, Alabama, in 2012
1. Acquired in 1969 per the catalog card that came with the collection. The vase was part of the Buten Museum of Wedgwood (operated 1958-1988), Merion, Pennsylvania. It was removed to the Nassau County Museums, Sands Point, Long Island, New York, in 1988 as a long-term loan upon closure of the Buten Museum of Wedgwood. It was placed on loan to the Birmingham Museum of Art, Alabama, in 2008, prior to being given to the Art Fund, Inc. at the Birmingham Museum of Art in 2012.
2. In and around 1971, Nettie Buten gave her children and grandchildren objects from her collection. These remained in the Buten Museum of Wedgwood and on loan to Nassau County and the Birmingham Museum of Art, prior to donation in 2012.
