TEACHING FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW

In this program, undergraduates and Master’s students are employed by the museum to lead gallery tours for school-aged audiences and adult visitors.

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?

During the first semester of the program, students are trained in teaching techniques and art history by BMA curators and educators, developing their knowledge of the BMA’s collection and special exhibitions. During the remaining three semesters, students commit to 10 hours a week to lead tours, while also receiving continuing education and meeting as a team. Summer tour opportunities may also be available.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

The Teaching Fellowship program at the Museum is designed as a pipeline program to prepare art history and studio students for careers in the arts. However, students from a variety of majors—History, English, Communications, and Early Childhood Education, among others—can use this opportunity to gain training, skills, and experience to further their careers in humanities research, communication, early childhood education, and teaching.

WHAT IS THE COMMITMENT?

Students will need to commit 10 hours a week:

  • Mandatory training is held on Monday afternoons (3-5pm).
  • Tours are given during BMA operating hours on both weekdays and weekends.

The ideal candidates will be eager to learn about the arts and comfortable talking to other people in a tour setting.

WHAT IS THE COMPENSATION?

Students are paid $15 per hour for up to 10 hours per week for research and teaching time.
