Three-quarter-length portrait of an elderly woman seated in a painted chair (the chair's ear is visible at far left) before a wall with a red curtain drawn to reveal a window, at right, through which can be seen a sunset painted in peach pink hues. The woman—who gazes directly at the viewer—wears a black dress with white trimmed sleeves, full-length black gloves, and a diaphanous white linen cap and kerchief. Her right arm rests on a large family Bible. She hold holds a pair of spectacles in her right hand, suggesting that she has just been reading the Scripture.

This black and white photograph represents apartments in San Francisco. Laundry hangs in front of the apartments. There are stairs leading from the bottom center to the center right. The white laundry on the clotheslines makes two diagonals, one begins in the bottom of the frame and extends up the right. The other begins in the top right corner of the bottom left and extends up and to the left. In the background are large apartment buildings iwth the highest point in the top right.
