Purpose: The Miles College Fellow for Public Programs assists the Manager of Public Programs and Partnerships within the Department of Learning and Engagement, supporting the BMA’s role as a vibrant and vital community resource. The Fellow will receive hands-on training in program development, event planning, and strategies for community engagement, where they will help create dynamic and inclusive programs reflective of the broader Birmingham community. As the capstone project for the fellowship, they will conceptualize and implement Miles College Night, an annual evening at the Museum every spring for Miles College students, faculty, and staff. This Fellow will also work to create initiatives to engage college youth at the Museum.
Length: 12 weeks
Terms: Late January through late April
Education: Advanced undergraduate (junior/senior)
Area of Study: Humanities, Education, Communication, or Business
Hours: 20 hours per week. The Museum is open from 10 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday
Stipend: $3600
Responsibilities:
- Assist in program development, implementation and evaluation
- Assist in intermediary communication with artists, speakers, and college and community leaders
- Work hands-on alongside Manager of Public Programs and Partnerships to meet program initiatives
- With the guidance of the Manager of Public Programs and Partnerships, plan and implement all aspects of Miles College Night
- Work with various departments at the Museum, including Institutional Advancement and Communications, to organize, coordinate, budget, and publicize the event
- Assist the Manager of Public Programs and Partnerships with projects as needed
- Ability to establish new connections with the Birmingham Museum of Art and Miles College students, faculty and staff

- Highly organized with the ability to handle multiple tasks at once
- Ability to operate efficiently, tactfully, and respectfully without close supervision
- Respects people of all backgrounds
- Must be able to lift 25lbs
- Excellent written and oral skills
- Ability to work evenings and weekends to meet program initiatives.
- Desire to strengthen the relationship between Miles College community and the Birmingham Museum of Art
