Canon, Fuji, Nikon, Panasonic, and Sony are just a few of many well-known brands of Japanese camera and film makers. As early as 1846, both Japanese and non-Japanese photographers capitalized on shooting famous sights of Japan, selling images not only to tourists and locals but also to global markets. Photography in China began a little earlier, in 1844. From that time until present day, robust forms of photography have flourished throughout Asia where groundbreaking development and production of photographic equipment and techniques continue to this day.

Predating photography, calligraphy and ink painting have been and continue to be culturally important throughout East Asia (China, Japan, and Korea). The influence of this ink work informs historic and contemporary black-and-white photography.

This focused installation of thirteen works from the permanent collection is on view throughout the East Asian galleries.
