Teacher Workshop: Private Eye: Observe, Describe, Create, Reflect
November 8, 2014 @ 8:00 am - 1:00 pm
This workshop offers hands-on techniques in how to develop observational skills by using the scientific method, careful drawings, and descriptive writing. Teachers will practice using jeweler’s loupes to study a variety of artifacts and natural objects related to the new African Galleries. Teachers will learn how to integrate College and Career-Ready standards in language arts with course of study objectives in visual arts, while investigating historically and culturally relevant topics with the eyes of a scientist. In addition, teachers will learn how to expand this unit to include a final abstract painting based on the previous activities, as well as a final writing component. This is a great unit for middle and high school language arts teachers, visual arts teachers, and can be adapted easily to upper elementary levels! Administrators are welcome to see a great example of how arts integration works, and the outstanding free resources available to all teachers through the Birmingham Museum of Art’s Education Department! As always, participants will leave with complete lesson plans, assessment materials, and finished original artwork
