“L’Heureux Ménage (The Happy Household)” by Marguerite Gérard

October 6, 2024, 1 - 1:30pm

This is a painting of a family of three, along with a helper. They are dressed in 18th c. French clothing, so long satin gowns for the two women and callouts for the man. The father is holding a young child who is pointing to a pug dog looking for attention. There seems to be a lot of chaos in this painting. The helper is holding to white doves trying to fly away. There is a cat turned on its back, laying on a green pillow, ad there is a piano in the background with sheet music strewn about.

Curious about works of art that aren’t always included on a BMA tour? Take a DeTour with us on select Sundays, where we’ll spend 30 minutes focusing on a work of art that is off the beaten path.

This Sunday, drop by and join BMA Teaching Fellow Jillian Woodruff as she facilitates a discussion on L’Heureux Ménage (The Happy Household) by Marguerite Gérard in the 18th c. European gallery.

Meet Jillian in the Main Lobby on the First Floor at 1:00 pm.
