African Heritage Festival

Join us to celebrate the vibrant traditions of African cultures and the Museum’s African art galleries with the return of the African Heritage Festival sponsored by Medical Properties Trust. This family-oriented festival will feature food, games, dance, and music!

African Djembe Drums Art Activity // 10am – 2pm

Djembe means “Gather in Peace.” Spread peace and joy by creating your own traditional African Djembe drum with provided materials.

Sahi On Ko Djony West African Dance and Drumming Experience // 1 – 2pm

Enjoy the captivating and magical charisma of West African drumming, dance, and folklore with a performance by Sahi On Ko Djony, pronounced (sah-hee on co jonee). Experience and learn of this cultural folklore, musical and dance form that dates back as far as 1400 A.D.

Jamaican Folk Music Workshop with Steve Higgins // 10:30 – 11:15am  and 12 – 12:45pm

Steve Higgins has been singing and touring locally and internationally for over 25 years, performing favorites from Sacred, Classical, Broadway, Ballads, Jazz to Folk musical genres with an infusion of Island music from his native Jamaica. Join him for this interactive workshop featuring demonstrations on Jamaican Music form as well as the stories behind specific songs and their historical contexts.

Face Painting with Yogi Dada // 10am-2pm

Local artist Yogi Dada’s artistic style is heavily influenced by African culture and urban graffiti. Enamor yourself in her elaborate African-inspired designs!

DIY Mancala Game // 10am – 2pm

Mancala is a game invented in Africa that has now become popular around the world for people of all ages. Create your own and enjoy the family fun!

Food Tastings & Food Trucks // 10am – 2pm

Enjoy Jamaican cuisine from WOED Experience and Kenyan food from Sahani True Nairobi Cuisine. Traditional Food tastings will also be available by Sahani while supplies last!
