The work features four primary areas of color: an area of red on the right side of the paper, a small purple triangle adjacent to an irregular white space on the lower left side of the paper, a small dash of orange paint above the red area surrounded by a partial black oval, and a blue and green irregular rectangle next to a patch of peach on the left side of the paper. This a bust-length portrait of a man with long sideburns, wavy brown hair and gray eyes, who gazes directly at the viewer. In his right hand, he holds a mahlstick; in his left hand, he holds a painter's palette, loaded with oil paint, and five brushes. In the foreground, a smoking pipe, two tubes of oil paint, and an open artist's box (containing several tubes of paint and a palette knife) rest on a table. In the background to the left, a blank canvas rests on an easel (only the bottom left rung of the easel is visible).
