Oval black basalt medallion with relief profile portrait of William III (1650-1702)  facing right, William III was the King of England, Scotland and Ireland. Son of William II of Orange and Mary daugher of Charles I. the English Princess Royal. As a Protestant, William III participated in several wars against the powerful Catholic king of France, Louis XIV, in coalition with Protestant and Catholic powers in Europe. When James II attempted to restore the Roman Catholic religion, alienated his people, William and his wife were invited to take his place. William landed near Torbay in 1688 and James quickly fled to France where he sought protection of Louis XIV.
