John Dermer’s compatriot Michael Dillon suggested that he apply to Wedgwood to work for a year as a studio potter, which he did in 1972. While at the factory, he experimented with shapes and styles in Wedgwood’s bone china and jasper. After spending a year producing primarily functional wares, Dermer returned to his native Australia, where he established his own design studio.
