Michael Dillon, Wedgwood

1965-1966

Michael Dillon was one of the many studio potters employed by Wedgwood during the 1960s and 1970s. Trained as a potter in his native Australia, Dillon moved to England, joining Wedgwood in 1970. The company gave Dillon much freedom in the created of his Asian-inspired, abstract shapes and earthy glazes, and he was a prolific artist during his short time at Wedgwood. Dillon died unexpectedly in 1976 at age 32.

Small cup-shaped pipe bowl of solid blue jasper with small symbols of the Zodiac in white relief, with a raised band below and a small round hole in the side.
Ewer of solid white jasper with black jasper dip and applied white jasper relief decoration, on square plinth decorated with white anthemion motifs, the round foot likewise with anthemion motifs, the stem with a band of beading and the lower body with lotus motifs, the main body with the applied figures of the nine Muses below a band of stylized anthemion motifs, above that a frieze of five small relief scenes in oval reserves, with beading around the neck, ruffled spout and snake handle.
Small, round, enameled copper bonbonnière in the shape of a brown and white spotted dog curled up on a blue cushion with orange fringe, the underside painted with a butterfly against a blue and white lattice patterned ground, with gilt metal mounts.
Round green jasper medallion with white relief of Cupid stringing his bow. Cupid also known as Eros or Amor, The god of Love, he is often seen portrayed with a bow and arrows in order to strike with his 'cupid's darts.
