About 1968

Like other studio potters at the Wedgwood factory, Elwyn James was given free hand to create his own shapes and glazes for bone china—at which he was particularly adept at modeling—and stoneware. Like his colleague Michael Dillon, James’s career was cut short. He died in 1978 at age 36.

Small enameled copper box, rectangular, with dark blue ground and gold highlights with reserves on the sides containing small floral sprays, the lid painted in a reserve with the scene of a man and woman with a sheep in wooded landscape, the box inscribed on the inside with the French "Vous Appas armes mes Bras."

Small bulb pot of white stoneware covered with an opaque variegated agate glaze in shades of brown, beige and yellow, below the lip a band of gilded fret work, the fitted cover with two fitments to hold bulbs and two smaller air holes, both the interior of the pot and underside of the cover are glazed black.
