Here Buhot’s search for a range of tonal values has led him to experiment with a variety of print-making techniques. The darker, velvety areas on the figures were made with drypoint; several of the shadows cast by the figures were made with a roulette; the dots in the foreground were made with the salt-ground technique; the aquatint is primarily in the small area just above the artist’s initials. The atmospheric sky was achieved by leaving a film of ink on the plate, with streaks wiped away to create the lightning.
