Cup and saucer of white jasper with lilac jasper dip and applied white jasper relief decoration, the cup with a series of cupids at play with dogs and birds and insects, one of the cupids plays a clarinet, the handle with molded acanthus leaf motifs and shell terminal, the lower part of the cup and the saucer engine turned with lilac and white stripes, the saucer with applied overlapping acanthus and stiff leaf motifs around the edge, the interior of the cup is lapidary polished.
Oval medallion with profile portrait of Viscount St. Albans, Francis Bacon (1561-1626). Francis Bacon was an English philosopher, lawyer and politician. Born in London, the son of Sir Nicholas Bacon. He went to Trinity College, Cambridge in 1573, and was called to be the Bar in 1582. He was elected member of Parliament in 1584, became Solicitor-General in 1607, and Attorney-General in 1613. He was raised to the peerage as Lord Verulam in 1618 and created Viscount St Albans in 1621. He is still today a famous philosopher known for his work the Novum Orgamum. He was found guilty of taking bribes from litigants and imprisoned in the Tower and banished from Parliament and the great court.
