1. According to a May 5, 1953 letter from Dr. Harold E. Simon, Birmingham, Alabama to Miss Wilson (Cora McDevitt Wilson), The Book and Print Shop, Hanover, New Hampshire. Simon purchased The Savage (1964.119) and The Sergeant (1979.285) from Wilson in 1953. See object file for 1964.119. In the letter, Simon writes, “I assume that these are both originals” and requests “any information you might have in regard to the history of these two pieces.” There is a May 12, 1953 invoice to Jackson in the object file for 1964.119, but no additional correspondence related to provenance.
