Inscription Transcription [from original gallery label]: Painting of a laughing monk. His ample stomach can accomodate the intolerable under heaven; he beams and laughs at the ridiculous people of the world. In my old age I saw this at temples and felt I could convey these words in a painting. Painted in the autumn of kuei-hai (1983) by K'o-jan.
Signature: K'o-jan
Seales: Li, K'o-jan, Ta-p'u lou, Pai-fa Li i
Provenance Purchase from the Chinese Artists' Association in 1986 by the Birmingham Museum of Art
