This a bust-length portrait of a man with long sideburns, wavy brown hair and gray eyes, who gazes directly at the viewer. In his right hand, he holds a mahlstick; in his left hand, he holds a painter's palette, loaded with oil paint, and five brushes. In the foreground, a smoking pipe, two tubes of oil paint, and an open artist's box (containing several tubes of paint and a palette knife) rest on a table. In the background to the left, a blank canvas rests on an easel (only the bottom left rung of the easel is visible).

This watercolor portrait represents the head, partial chest, and gathered hair of a woman. She looks directly at the viewer and is wearing an elaborate green hat with a large black bow. Part of her chest is represented in watercolor. Her clothing is not detailed, but the extension of the black bow and her hair gathered in a ponytail extend where the front of her body would be located.
