The Gardener

Maxfield Parrish

1906

Known for his whimsical subjects and use of dazzling colors—including the brilliant blue that bears his name—Maxfield Parrish was among the most popular American artists of the twentieth century. Although a gifted painter, Parrish is perhaps best remembered for his illustration work, providing cover art for leading magazines such as Life, Scribner’s and Collier’s, and now iconic advertisements for Edison-Mazda light bulbs and JELL-O ® gelatin.

Although dated 1907, this wry image of a steadfast gardener adorned the cover of the June 23, 1906 issue of Collier’s weekly magazine.
