Large mostly red white and blue cotton embroidered and appliqued quilt designed to commemorate the bicentennial of the signing of the US constitution in 1787 in the center a blue square edged in red and with a smaller red square at an angle inside it within this a blue square with the image of a full rigged ship on its way to the New World at each corner a roundel that includes representations of the three branches of the United States government as well as liberty illustrated by a torch in the lower right corner at the top are the dates 1787 and 1987 and the American flag flanked by the flags of the four European countries that contributed to the early European settlement of North America Great Britain Spain the Netherlands and France along the sides are olive branches signifying peace and along the bottom of the quilt are thirteen individuals in native or traditional dress representing the diversity of the United States
