Oval medallion with relief profile portrait of Stanislaw II Augustus Poniatowski King of Poland 1732 1795 Last King of Poland Elected 1964 as successor of Augustus III Elector of Saxony Frederick the Great agreed a partition of Poland with Austria and endeavoured to get Russian assistance In 1772 the first partition of Poland took place but intrigues among the Polish nobles again resulted in Prussian and Russian intervention and to a second partition in 1793 In 1794 a rebellion started which led to the defeat of both Russian and Prussian armies but the Austrians defeated Kosciusko the Polish patriot at Warsaw and severely wounded he was taken prisoner Stanislas abdicated and died in St Petersburg His weakness considerably contributed to the Polish defeat
