This medal is based on a Wedgwood model that was first produced in December 1787 in both basalt and jasper after the seal of the Committee for the Abolition of the Slave Trade (later the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade). The original model is attributed to William Hackwood and includes the inscription “AM I NOT A MAN AND A BROTHER?” The inscription was take from a poem by Thomas Day, written in 1773, entitled “The Dying Negro.”
