Saucer Dish

This service was made for John Schanck, Royal Navy, who was in charge of the naval establishment in Newfoundland. He was later attached to the army of General John Burgoyne and is best remembered for his naval victory against the American revolutionaries on Lake Champlain in 1776.

Vase with a waisted form that flares out and then tapers to the base. The exterior is decorated with plain bands circling the form and a central band made up of horizontal, jagged grooves that decrease in size as they move down the vase. The lip of the vase declines inward toward the center of the vase. The vase's interior is glazed gray-blue with a slight green cast to it. The glaze does not extend completely to the bottom of the vase's interior where there are some lumps and areas with no final color glaze. The vase is heavy.

The dish is a flat, open and almost bowl-like shape. The dish's exterior is beige stoneware decorated with dark brown flecks that decrease in number at the top of the base. There are some faint impressed lines along the dish's body. The interior is a light brown with dark brown flecks. The impressed lines on the form are also visible in the interior. As the interior moves toward the center of the bowl, the dark flecks begin to create lines that circle the interior form.
