Return of the Herd

Wu Zuoren

Mid-Autumn, 1982

After studying oil painting and drawing in Europe for five years (1930-1934), Wu Zuoren returned to China where he applied this learning to traditional Chinese painting techniques and subject matter. The receding space and treatment of the camels in this picture are both European inspired. However, the broad expanses of desert defined in dry brushstrokes and the heavy ink washes used to depict the camels are characteristic of Chinese painting styles.
