Florence Day made this quilt for her granddaughter, Martha Florence Day. Stitched on the back is “Florence Day to Martha Day, 1938.” This handsome applique quilt was made from a Stearns and Foster Company kit. Quilt kits and printed paper patterns for quilts were introduced in the late nineteenth century in America and were very popular in the 1920s and 1930s. These kits contained everything the person would need to make the quilt: fabric, samples, and paper patterns or templates.
