Feasting Dish Inscribed with Quranic Verses commissioned by the Kingdom of Aceh Darussalam (1496-1903)

Ming dynasty (1368-1644), About 1600

This large platter is decorated with verses from the Koran in Arabic script and was no doubt intended for commerce with an Islamic clientele. The verses read:


I seek refuge in the Lord of men, the King of men,
the God of men, from the mischief of the slinking  
prompter who whispers in the hearts of men, from
the jinn [evil spirit] and men.
