The Ayles was a merchant family in London. This and a round plate (2010.100) are from the same service. During the eighteenth century each course of a meal was served on a separate dish. Sets of china therefore could consist of literally hundreds of pieces.

Large, rectangular, cast-iron plaque with the relief image of the Deposition, or Entombment of Christ, after being removed from the cross, the body of Christ is carried by Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea to the grave, behind them are the Virgin Mary swooning, Mary Magdalene, Martha and her sister Mary as well as Saint John against an architectural background, in a cast-iron frame with acanthus leaf motifs.

Sugar bowl with a bucket shape that flares out twice and tapers in towards the base. The exterior is matte black with some slight impressed banding visible on the body. The lid is circular with an exaggerated 'u' shape in its center.
