A May 11, 1888 review of the painting, which appeared in the [London] Globe, described the painting as follows: No story is told in Mr. F. D. Millet's "A Tender Chord," but it is a work of great refinement and beauty. It represents a tall and pensive lady of the last century standing beside a wide window with a lute in her hands. In addition to the graceful simplicity of the figure and the very artistic treatment of the draper, the picture is remarkable for its truthful illumination and unity of effect. The glow of reflected light and colour is admirably rendered.

This a bust-length portrait of a man with long sideburns, wavy brown hair and gray eyes, who gazes directly at the viewer. In his right hand, he holds a mahlstick; in his left hand, he holds a painter's palette, loaded with oil paint, and five brushes. In the foreground, a smoking pipe, two tubes of oil paint, and an open artist's box (containing several tubes of paint and a palette knife) rest on a table. In the background to the left, a blank canvas rests on an easel (only the bottom left rung of the easel is visible).
In a landscape of water, rocks, and thick foliage, two herons attempt to catch a moth that flies above them. The herons are characterized by their brown, black, and white feathered bodies with yellow feathers around their eyes, dark green feathers on their heads, and long, pointed beaks. The heron on the left is also characterized by his body shape with an elongated neck and large talons.
