Pair of covered dishes in the form of turtles

Pair of Covered Bowls Shaped as Turtles

Qing dynasty (1644-1912), About 1750

Whimsical designs were very popular with both the domestic and the export market in China. Here, two covered dishes are done as small turtles. The tops lift off to reveal pure white glazed interiors. The pieces are so finely finished that even the underside of the shells and the feet of the turtles are carefully done.
