Open Content Program

The Birmingham Museum of art makes available digital images of works in the Museum’s collection believed to be in the public domain. Images are available free of charge for any use, commercial or non-commercial. Users do not need to contact the Museum for authorization to use these images. They are available through the Online Collection at artsbma.org/collection. See detailed instructions for specific work types below.

Identifying Open Content Images

The mission of the Birmingham Museum of Art is to spark the creativity, imagination, and liveliness of Birmingham by connecting all its citizens to the experience, meaning, and joy of art. The Museum understands that by sharing images of works online without restrictions, the BMA collection becomes more accessible to a larger audience.

For objects with images the rights status is displayed in the “credit line” section of the object information. The rights status or rights holder will be indicated. If the work is in the public domain and/or the image may be downloaded, the download icon will appear in the bottom right corner of the image area. To search the collection click here.

Works With Restrictions

For copyright-protected images that have been approved by copyright holders, a presentation-sized image is available, but can not be downloaded. A copyright statement clearly listing the name of the copyright holder is visible in the credit line area when the image is displayed. Thumbnail-sized images of copyrighted works are displayed under fair use.

When the owner of a work is impossible to determine or contact, the work is deemed an orphan work. The Museum will make thumbnails of orphan works available. If you are the representative or rights holder of an orphan work, please contact Rights and Reproductions.

Credit/Citations

Please use the following source credit when reproducing an Open Content image: Courtesy Birmingham Museum of Art, followed by the credit line provided in the object description.

Although there are no restrictions or conditions of the use of an Open Content image, the BMA would appreciate a gratis copy of any scholarly publication(s) in which the images are reproduced in order to maintain collection bibliography. Copies may be sent to the attention of:

Octagonal butterfly lustre bowl with orange interior and mother-of-pearl exterior. The bowl has a solid golden trim on the upper and bottom rim. A wide golden geometric pattern (3.5cm) in the upper third is placed over blue glaze, intersected with four framed medallions showing Asian-inspired architecture and vegetation. The scene of the medallions on opposite sides are the same. A pattern of continuous husks of wheats is set underneath. The body of the bowl is decorated with four golden flying birds carrying a seated person on their back. Two of the birds have their necks retracted, the other two have an outstretched neck. The birds are alternated with a depiction of a rabbit on the remaining four plains of the bowl. A golden, endless Greek-key pattern decorates the bottom rim. The vibrant, mottled orange interior glaze is decorated with a wide golden trellis band (3cm) with blue bells hanging underneath. Three large, golden butterflies in different positons (open/closed wings) are alternating with three small, golden butterflies with open wings. Part of the butterflies are highlighted with red, green and blue glaze. The bottom of the bowl is decorated with a large golden rosette with red, green and blue glaze.

Assembled, solid blue jasper tea service on tray with applied white jasper relief decoration, consisting of a tea canister, teapot, creamer, covered sugar bowl, waste bowl, and two cups and saucers, .1) oval tray with a raised edge decorated with a white acanthus leaf border, in the center an oval medallion with a sunflower; .2a-b) tea canister of solid light blue jasper with a darker blue dip, bulbous body on a round foot with a laminated white band around it, the body with the figures of cupids at play and a band of overlapping acanthus leaves around the shoulder, with beading below the upper lip, the cover a marriage; .3) waste bowl engine-turned on the lower body, the upper body decorated with figures of baby cupids at play in various pursuits, with a white laminated band around the foot; .4) creamer helmet shaped with curved handle, the round foot with a laminated white band and acanthus leaves, the body decorated with cupid figures at play, the handle with margent and an applied shell terminal; .5a-b) covered sugar bowl on round foot with laminated white band around it, the body decorated with cupids at play, the conforming domed cover with a band of acanthus leaves and stiff leaf motifs, with ball finial with a white band around it; .6a-b) teapot decorated with the same playful cupids along with a pair of girls from the "Domestic Employment" series, the lower body engine-turned, with leaf-molded spout and loop handle with leafy terminal, the conforming cover with stiff leaf motifs and ball finial with white band around it; .7a-b) cup and saucer the cup with engine-turned lower body and the same playful cupids and girls around the main body, with leaf-molded loop handle, the interior lapidary polished, the saucer likewise engine turned and with a band of overlapping acanthus leaves around the edge; .8a-b) cup and saucer the cup with engine-turned lower body and the same playful cupids and girls around the main body, with leaf-molded loop handle, the interior lapidary polished, the saucer likewise engine turned and with a band of overlapping acanthus leaves around the edge.
